Because the collections, booths, display panel of the museum architecture are mainly woodwork, which have a special structure and high hazard of fire, the conventional fire protection standard of this kind of buildings have already exposed more and more flaws. How to carry on the fire protection design to this kind of buildings safely and reasonably has become the present focal problem.Combined with the working experience, this article took a large museum building as an example to make a performance-based fire-protection study on its fire design. Based on the typical problems existed, this article solved the problems by setting up the fire safety goals, performance criterion, fire scenario and simulated the occupants'evacuation time, smoke spread, radiation flow etc and use the developed engineering method. This article suppose that museums should at least adopt the methods which have the equivalent safety level with the existed national standard to achieve the fire safety goals, to solve the problems of inadaptation between the current standard and the practical need or problems caused by imperfect provisions.On the evacuation design, the author holds the view that the exits in these buildings can be more and the evacuation width can be increased by making full use of the room of the museum. And the wide of the safety exit and evacuation distance can be determined according to the occupants'evacuation time, smoke temperature, sedimentation height, concentration of CO2 and CO, and visibility. The best choice of the methods to prevent and discharge smoke should be made according to the geometrical characteristics of the buildings. In the cases that the fire equipment are normal started up, all the exits are employed, and the fire shutter of the museum become invalid, internal personnel can evacuate safely, and the museum has some margin of safety, the smoke will not cause any injuries and it can ensure the safely evacuation of all personnel from the scene. The design has achieved the set goal of fire safety.Based on the findings of this article, proper proposals to the design of the museum fire control system are presented.
