| Urban traffic congestion is a common problem in the process of urbanization around the world, which affects the social progress and economic development seriously. With the rapid development of economy and society, and the acceleration of urbanization process in China, urban traffic congestions appear in many cities one after another, and become more and more seriously. Xi'an, as the hub and mega-city in the western of China, also has been troubled by urban traffic congestion for a long time. Since the reform and opening up particularly over the past decades, the economy of Xi'an has maintained rapid development, the number of motor vehicles increased rapidly and has been over a million. Urban transport supply can not meet the rapid growth of traffic demand, transport infrastructure and management unable to adapt to the needs of urban development, the traffic congestion in Xi'an appears a trend of deterioration, and has become an obstacle of the process of economy and society. So that the author decided to do research on the problem of traffic congestion in Xi'an, with the hope to do benefits for improving the urban transport system efficiency and reducing the traffic congestions.This paper is a pragmatic approach, for the author did a lot of preparations, such as collection of information, field survey; and then analyzes the causes of traffic congestion in Xi'an according to the traffic conditions, proposed countermeasures to solve the traffic congestion. This paper firstly introduced the theory related to the city traffic and traffic congestion, and summed up the successful experience to reduce traffic congestion in domestic and international cities; Secondly, pointed out the main reasons for traffic congestion of Xi'an through analyzing the situation and urban transport problems; Then, proposed the solutions to traffic congestion in Xi'an according to the reasons for congestion, such as scientific planning for urban expansion area, increasing the infrastructure for pedestrian crossing the street and parking, traffic demand management to private transport trips, and so on. All recommendations presented in this article were given to examples about how to practice. The examples mainly include Ming City Wall area and some sections and junctions of Chang'an road. This paper is more practical than the previous theoretical studies on urban traffic congestion. |
