With the rapid development of transport, a large number of early constructed reinforced concrete bridges constructed in early years have emerged various degrees of structural damage because of overloading, aging and lack of maintenance. The continuous accumulation of this damage will affect the carrying capacity and the service life and even threat the safety of the operation. There are no standards and methods to accurately assess the remaining capacity of existing road bridge with damages. Thus, the concrete beam's analysis about bearing capacity with damages is an important problem which needed to be solved urgently. This paper relies on "The relationship between the concrete bridge's damage and bearing capacity" (issue No. Y-030201) in Zhejiang Province. The bearing capacity of the reinforced concrete beam bridge had been researched in the paper. The key points of the research are as follows:First, an overview of the basic theory of damage and a brief analysis about the mechanism of concrete bridge's damage are given; several common types of damage and those's influence on the reinforced concrete structure are analyzed and explained in detail, which provides theoretical basis for studying the damage's influence on the bearing capacity.Second, several constitutive relation of concrete and steel used commonly are introduced. The causes and mechanical properties about the breakage and crack of concrete are analyzed detailedly and a finite element simulation is proposed.Further more, the bearing capacity of the hollow beams which dismantled from an old bridge is studied through experiments. The impact of the concrete damage and cracks in the structure on the bearing capacity is simulated by establishing a separate ANSYS finite element model of reinforced concrete, and then the remaining load capacity of the structure is estimated The experimental test values are compared with the theoretical values and that the simulation results are in well agreement with the experimental results is found, which proves that the finite element simulation method is feasible, the remaining load capacity of the structure with damage of are analyzed accurately. Finally, the qusetions which need urgently to be solved in the further research work are proposed.
