Symbiotic Protection Strategy For Industrial Heritages By Huangpu River

Following the opening of the Shanghai port, the economic and social changes in Shanghai approached the second climax during the past two or three decades. With the rapid development of economy, urbanization and urban construction, the city of Shanghai has undergone tremendous changes, which makes her become one of the world's densest cities. However, the urban sprawl and the urban suburbanization cause the decline of urban vitality, the increase of living cost and the reducing of the urban efficiency. The revival of city center becomes a new subject. The new round of development urgently requires the city to return to round of development, and strength the restore of remaining resources.From another point of view, Shanghai was registered as the second batch of national historical and cultural city in 1986. Despite the Government's speeding up the pace of legislation on protection of cultural heritages and the increasing of capital investment as well as the enhancing awareness of social protection and the increased restore practices, but relative to the maneuvering of the urbanization process, some of these results seems to be bleak, the historical heritages draws the short straw, surviving in the cracks of the city difficultly.Because of the adjustment of industrial structure, a large number of industrial heritages emerge along the waterfront of Huangpu River. Characterized by important historical, artistic, scientific, economic and social value, they are the vector of the memories of the city. Through the protection and reuse of them, the economy of downtown area will be revived to obtain huge economic benefits. At the same time, the landscape in the center of the city will be optimized and the vitality of downtown area will be irradiated. This paper aims to build protection strategies on riverside industrial heritages, to achieve coordinated use of a variety of resources and sustainable development.By means of several methods such as field research, surveying and mapping, the paper grasps the basic information of the riverside industrial heritages, including the number, characteristics, historical stages, functional type and style of technique. With the analysis of the historical background and the impact of contemporary urban construction, the paper then takes research in the spatial structure of the riverside industrial heritages.Through the analysis of the destruction of industrial heritages, lack of protection statistics, fault of protection practices, the studies researches the difficulties faced by riverside industrial heritages. Also the problems of current landscape on both sides are put forward and the theory and practice of protection of riverside industrial heritages at home and abroad are also briefly described in the paper.Based on the characteristics and the status of the riverside industrial heritages, a symbiotic protection strategy is presented. The feasibility study is conducted from three aspects: urban planning, urban design and industrial heritages. Finally the restore of Xinhua dock is taken as an example to demonstrate the strategy.
