Since ancient times, the external transport is the main support of towns to survival and development. The ancient towns grow multi-spontaneously along the external distribution channel or waterway. However, due to restrictions by the simple means of transport, the activities'scope of ancient residents has been limited to small areas. With the small urban space, communication links between cities greatly affected and constrained. Today, with advances in transportation technology and expanding the distance people travel, the relations between external transportation and urban land expansion become closer and more prominent than in the past. To further explore the role of the laws is of great theoretical and practical significance for the achievement of external transport and urban land coordinated development.Dezhou is a developed city due to traffic. Grand Canal, Jin-Pu Railway, Beijing-Shanghai Expressway have important influences on the city's development. They staied visible stamp in the course of the evolution of urban space. Therefore, the process of Dezhou city's external transport and land development is of some regularity and strong typicality. This paper take Dezhou City as an example to launch analysis, hoping to provide reference and case accumulation for other traffic hubs in China on external transport and land use research. The main contents include:1. Combing home and abroad on external transport, urban land expansion, the progress and results of both relationship, further clarifying the studies'level and content.2. Carring out system analysis on the evolution of character and regularity about space structure, morphology, function space——which are three aspects of urban expansion under the three different traffic-dominant ways of Dezhou. 3. Taking the area affected by one traffic mode as a research object.Studing the land structure, dynamic characteristics and timing of land expansion in the traffic portal area. And through in-depth analyzing the inner relevance of industrial, logistics land and traffic portal, to further reveal the law of land space distribution and factors.4. Combining the future trends' interpretation of external transport in Dezhou, proposing concepts of spatial development and improvement recommendations for the land layout under the influence of the external transport.
