The ancient navigation and shipping business are quite prosperous in China. And the Chinese ancient ship is world-renowned as well designed, fully equipped and always has a big and solid hull. As a result of the very special hull construction technology, the scale of the Chinese traditional ship is usually large than the foreign ancient boat. The Zhenghe Treasure Ship is most representative because its huge hull forms. Although there are many clear records of the Treasure Ship in the historical documents, some people still have doubts. The multiple layers of planks found in the ancient seagoing boat of Song Dynasty unearthed in Quanzhou, is the best response to these questions. Because the multiple layers of planks, as well other typical characteristics of the Chinese ancient ship for instance the transverse watertight bulkheads, the hard side girder and the secure keel, are the crucial technologies to construct the large ships like the Zhenghe Treasure Ship. In this paper, the multi-plate structure is analyzed and discussed by using the method of the modern ship and ocean structures mechanics.Firstly, three peak phases of the ancient shipbuilding industry of China is briefly introduced, and some typical structural features related to the structure strength of the Chinese ancient ship are summarized. Secondly, the multi-plate structure technology greatly improved the hull construction process of the Chinese ancient large-scale ship. Finally, the method of finite element analysis is applied to the multi-plate structure. And the reasonable finite element models of the multi-plate structure and the simple single shell are established to calculate the state of the longitudinal strength and the wooden plate bending residual stress. After the combination of the overall longitudinal bending stress and residual stress, the resultant stress of the multi-plate structure is lower than that of the single shell. Therefore, the advance and rationality of the multi-plate structure is proved.
