Patterns as the decorative arts, in raising the recreation and connotation of art works is incomparable for other artist materials. Although the pattern only is a small category of arts and attached to the designed works, it plays an important role in enhancing the depth and breadth of art works. The article takes as the subject the special patterns in the Tang Dynasty when the arts and cultures were highly developed in the Chinese history. From the angles of morphology, inheritance, development, it discovers what inspiration and help the Tang culture can bring to the modern landscape design. The Tang pattern elements are fully used to create an excellent landscape design which not only meets the aesthetic standard, but also shows the local characteristics, history, culture and folk customs. The article also describes the development and evolution of patterns in the Tang Dynasty and narrates how necessary it is to use the pattern in the modern landscape design through case analysis as well as the application and influence of the Tang patterns in the modern landscape design.The article has the patterns as the main line and mainly consists of three parts. The first part mostly describes the connection between the historical background in the Tang Dynasty and the patterns. On the political, economic, and cultural aspects, it tells what influence the social development had on the patterns and ends with the development and evolution of the Tang patterns. The second part mainly elaborates the advantages of the patterns in the landscape design and the necessity which the patterns shall be included in the landscape design. The third part is about the Tang patterns'application in the modern landscape design, which is composed of the aesthetic applications, case applications, inheritance applications.This article takes the Tang pattern as the study subject and as the landscape design as the study area. By the comparison and analysis of cases to clarify that the arts are interlinked and referential for each other. It also on the basis of the theories explores the meaning of the Tang pattern's application in the modern landscape design by studying for the practical cases.
