Fast and accurate fault isolation would effectively increase the security and reliability of the power system. The wide area measurement information is introduced so as to increase the speed of fault location, minimize the outage area, as well as enhance the performance of the protection.A novel fault element location algorithm in the power system based on cluster analysis is proposed in this paper. By means of cluster analysis and graph theory, the system is partitioned into several protection zones. Reset the threshold value so.the area of the protection zones can be resized. The sum of the current(power) is calculated in each zone for fault detection. If there is a fault in the protection zone, by gradually minimizing the zone, the fault area will be eventually located. In terms of large scale system, initial location of the fault area is implemented based on the principle of voltage fault component, which greatly shorten the fault clearance time. Finally, influence factors of the method are analyzed based on the PSCAD simulation.
