The key issue of wide area backup protection has been concentrated on the rapidly and accurately fault component location. The location method used in this backup protection system is mainly relaying on the voltage and current synchro phasors provided by phasors measurement unites, PMU. In order to remove fault before the normal backup protection system, a higher request is put forward on PMU placement and fault location. In this paper, the research of PMU placement and novel faulted location method based on wide area measurement system, WAMS, will be the focus on which a lot attention has been put.First, a optimized scheme of staged PMU placement which can ensure the observability in fault is discussed in this paper. In the scheme, firstly, the wide system is devided by communication,economic and balance, and the nodes' vulnerability index is sorted in the zones according to entropy.Then,on these basis, the theory of maximum tree is used in the zonal and phased placement of PMU. At last, PMU placement is checked and added to the observability in fault.Then, a way of fault location based on wide-area voltage is put according to the electrical characteristics of line fault. This method need no modification of the network, thus fault can be determined on the element at the first time; it puts high require on the full PMU placement on the other hand.Finally, the paper proposes a method of fault location for multi-terminal lines based on real-time fault area. According to the demand of system observability with a fault, the network is divided into several fault configuration domains with the imaginary fault, then fault can be located in the real-time fault area when it occurred. Through large numbers of simulations, the method proposed above is proved to be an effective approach to PMU placement and fault location in wide-area protection.
