Reactive power compensation equipments play a very important role in improving power quality and economic efficiency of power grid. In recent years, the controllable reactor gradually become an important device for reactive power compensation, also it has broad application prospects.In this paper, we select controllable reactor based on magnetic flux adjustable as our research object, study its application in reactive power compensation. Firstly, this paper establishes its general mathematical model and analyzes its basic principles in detail. Then puts forward control strategies and the specific implementation method for the controllable reactor. And derives transfer function of the whole control system theoretically at the same time.Secondly, due to the controllable reactor applied in reactive power compensation needs for real-time accurate measurement, and the traditional reactive power measurement method can not do this. So this paper introduces instantaneous reactive power theory and the theory-based detection methods in detail, concludes the advantages and shortcomings of the detection methods through analysis of them. Then improves the selected method, and gives its simulation circuit and results analysis.Finally, this paper details hardware and software design of the controllable reactor controller. Controller device consists of control module and data module, the former is responsible for the management of controllable reactor and communication with the outside world, and the latter is responsible for data collection and processing, control algorithms and PWM waveform output. This paper describes the chips of modules and their working principles, and gives the hardware design schematic of each module. In Software design part, this paper introduces the principles of main programme for each module and gives the design flow chart.
