With its economic developing, China's real estate market is in a stage of rapid development and largely construction, and the high-speed development has caused many the problems exposed by the universal concern of the community. Currently, many outdoor environment is designed on the basis of an" architectural design that is isolated from the overall environment". As planning ignores the complementary relationship between buildings and the environment, landscape design can only repairs reluctantly, and can't integrate the environment well, let alone achieving a desired outdoor space-man and the nature, buildings and the environment acting with harmony. Penetration is the premises of the integration between building and the environment, and the interpenetrating space can therefore create a variety of spatial form. As such space is where people live in and is used frequently, the design not only affects the overall image of the settlements, it also relates to the people's daily lives. So the research of mutual-penetrating space between the building and the environment has a very important practical significance.Firstly, the thesis expatiates on the status quo of residential design. And on this basis, it analyses the significance of mutual-penetrating between building and the environment, and survey characteristics and rules of people's behavior in the mutual-penetrating spaces. Meanwhile, this thesis analyzes features and impact factors of this space, in the instruction of theory of architecture, ecology, psychology and other disciplines. Furthermore, it classifies this space with different types of settlements, and studies each characteristics. This thesis is on the basis of examples and previous literature studies, Based on the spirit of "people-oriented" ideas, it studies the design of mutual-penetrating space between buildings and environment with a purpose of achieving design principles, guidelines, design methods for the design of mutual-penetrating space.
