The converter of superconducting magnets energy storage system (SMES) is the bridge between superconducting magnets and power grid and is important to the SMES application. Because SMES can exchange active power with grid through converter, it plays an irreplaceable role in solving the dynamic stability problem and improving the quality and reliability of power supply.A monitoring system design is presented for SMES converter. Based on microprogrammed control unit (MCU) with digital signal processor (DSP), MCU is used as the processor for display module of monitoring system and DSP is used for the power module control. MCU is used to realize the function of liquid crystal display (LCD) terminal and man-machine interface. DSP is used for real-time data acquisition, data processing and power switching device control.According to the design of the monitoring system, the topology of monitoring system, the hardware and software design methods are introduced. The hardware circuits of monitoring system include control system, signal regulating circuit, display terminal hardware circuit are construed at the same time. SMES converter monitoring system is accomplished with 32-bit fixed-point DSP TMS320F2812 and fully integrated mixed-signal system-on-a-chip MCU C8051F020. Meanwhile, the software design and characteristics of monitoring system is introduced. Finally, the designed monitoring system is applied to converter connectingto actual grid for active power compensation experiments with SMES. Test results show that the designed monitoring system is reliable for SMES converter monitor.
