With the development of the power system in China, more and more series capacity compensations have been used in transmission system extensively and the SSO problems caused by series capacity compensation also come. In this paper, the basic mechanisms about SSO and the influences of different generator output and different degree of series compensation have been analyzed. A sub-mode design method of SVC-SSO damper controller has been brought up and tested on IEEE standard model. For the first project of damping SSO by using SVC in ShanXi Jinjie power plant, using RTDS build a digital closed-loop control real-time simulation platform. Comparing with the project test waveform, simulation results show that the damping controller can effectively damp SSO. Finally, the effects of SSO by SVC capacity are analyzed and the capacity configuration options are given.
