The basic function of Shipborne Automatic Identification System (AIS) is establishing communication between ships to ships or ships to shore by using SOTD-MA communication technology at sea VHF band. It can automatically send navigation and collision avoidance information and receive the above information from around ships at the same time. As all the ships are equipped with AIS, ships are "visible"between each other. They know themselves as well as other ship's characteristic parameters and navigation status, which could provide information support for implementing ship collision avoidance decision, improving ship navigation security.All the passenger ships, tankers and cargo ships over 300 tons engaged on international voyages, as well as new ships and all passenger ships engaged in domestic voyages must be equipped with AIS according to the requirements of SOLAS Convention amendment. Although the IMO only requires civilian vessels to install AIS, military ships sailing under the same marine environment face the same complicated navigational environment at sea and carry out the same International Regulations for Preventing Collisions. Moreover, when warships are sailing in confidential, the civilian vessels could hardly find its navigation track. In this case, warships undertake a greater responsibility for avoiding collision. Once accident happens, the warship will suffer serious losses.Therefore, from the perspective of improving safety of warship navigation, it is also very necessary for warships to equip themselves with AIS. However, if Universal AIS was directly installed at warships, it would inevitably bring great security risk. It is absolutely forbidden. So we assume a method, which makes civilian technology applied to warships, while meeting the requirement of military navigation. This is also main objective of this article.With military AIS as the research object, this paper analyzed the necessity of warship shipborne AIS. On the basis of composition, working principle and key technology of the Universal AIS, we proposed the concept of Military shipborne AIS. Our research put forward right hardware and software environment according to military needs and propose design scheme on military AIS system (including the application of SA Mathematical into track calculation). Part of functions of the system is also achieved.
