With the rapid development of the economy, the both international and domestic (between north and south) transportation of goods has been growing. As an important part of the transportation, maritime transport is increasingly busy. It is an import research topic that how to ensure the safety of maritime transportation.Chengshantou waters are the throat of north-south transportation in China, and also an important channel for international transportation. Chengshantou waters have carried out TSS, and the traffic is very busy. This paper analysis characteristics and patterns of traffic in Chengshantou by studying the traffic flow with AIS equipment. According to the status and characteristics in Chengshantou, the paper studies the traffic flow in two directions, north and south.The paper studies the vessel speed and the vessel traffic volume. When studying the distribution of vessel speed and vessel traffic volume, the paper uses the method of statistics first and then uses wavelet theory to denoise. The paper also studies the relationship between vessel speed and vessel traffic volume, using the method of data fitting to fit the data processed. The verifying data is used to verify the conclusion.Through this research, the wavelet theory is introduced to marine traffic to study the vessel traffic flow. The study of the relationship between vessel traffic volume and vessel speed is also consistent with previous research. It is a new method to study the relationship between the vessel traffic flow and vessel speed.
