The work in the thesis is a part of the project-"The distributed high speed generator system driven by micro-turbines and its energy conversion system", which is supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. The high speed machine has been widely investigated since it has high speed, small size, power density and high efficiency. But the high speed machine has a lot of difficulties, such as electromagnetic and structure designs,characteristics analysis, stress calculation, loss and temperature rise calculations, visible machine design software. Electromagnetic design and performance characteristics of high speed machine are analyzed by academic research and experimental study. The main contents are listed as follows:Firstly, the structure design of the HSPM stator and rotor are engaged. Calculation method and process of stator ring windings are particularly introduced. The sizes and design process of HSPM machine are given on the basis of coupled field-circuit. The high speed machine is designed and analyzed by magnetic circuit method and FEM. The machine coefficients and parameters which are used in magnetic circuit method are calculated,Secondly, by this method, the operation performance characteristics are calculated, and the electromagnetic characters of HSPM machine are simulated using FEM. Based on analytic method, the interference is determined and the stress distribution is calculated. Winding loss of HSPM machine is calculated and analyzed by superposition method, and analytical expressions of air friction loss are given by FEM. Rotational magnetization and alternate magnetization in stator core are analyzed, and calculation of core loss based on wave method and locus method is used. Experimental results of core losses in HSPM machine are presented, and the calculated date and the experimental results are analyzed and compared. Then, the average temperature rise and temperature distribution diagram in the machine is obtained.Finally, design software of HSPM machine is drawn up on the base of coupled field-circuit method, which has a man-machine interface. Combined programming method of MATLAB, ANSYS and Visual Basic are given, which makes MATLAB and ANSYS run with the VB environment. By the software, the difficulty of using MATLAB and ANSYS is decreased, and the efficiency of machine design is greatly improved. The prototypes are manufactured and some primary tests have been engaged. The BMF of the windings are measured for different speeds at no load condition, and the experiment of high speed machine is carried on at load condition. Those results lay a foundation for the future research work.
