Unconventional Constructions

This thesis systemizes and introduces special constructions besides the conventional construction---non-conventional construction. Non-construction refers to construction which, in certain circumstances, using unconventional materials, details, structures and construction methods etc. to meet the special needs. The first part of the thesis examines the characteristics and differences of conventional construction and non-construction, and points out that the conceptions of conventional and unconventional are not only relative, but interchangeable in specific cases. The second part divides the examples of unconventional construction into four categories: emergency construction, local construction, junk materials construction and innovative construction according to the inherent characteristics of construction, and examine them from multi-angles such as material, detail, structure, process of construction respectively. The final part discusses the practical significance and application prospects of unconventional construction. This thesis tries to make a systematic arrangement of non-conventional construction, to make up the deficiency of current study on non-conventional construction, and to raise the awareness in this region. Further more, this thesis also tries to use descriptive study method, through interpretation of examples, to provide diversity solutions dealing with practical problems for the managers, and to broad the horizons for designers.
