The air brake system is of the key part for railway freight wagon. For many years, the manufacturing process is relatively backward, which have had great impact on upgrading of the overall technology level of the freight wagon affecting the operation safety of the freight wagon, application efficiency of rolling stocks is also limited for further improvement. This paper presents optimization and improved design on the manufacturing process with mature advanced technology on the basis of analysis on the previous process situation.1. To research and improve the assembly process. The interchangeable approach assembly process, compatible with the mass production, is used in lieu of the previous adjustment & repair assembly. With appropriate analysis, ascertain the assembly positioning datum line, draw the proper assembly module unit and assembly process, resolve the assembly dimension chain to distribute tolerance, design assisted facility, to achieve module like assembly operation and standard approach so as to enhance the assembly quality. Using finite element analysis, front and rear parts of the assembly process to improve the internal stress is numerically simulated to verify the effectiveness of process improvement.2. Optimization of manufacturing process for parts and components. Manufacturing process for brake pipe is optimized for improvement by means of upgrading of manufacturing equipment and test & measurement method and of applying spraytron, numerical control pipe bending, automatic welding and automatic testing and measuring; CAE software analysis through the calculation of the brake cylinder parts to optimize sheet metal forming processes, improve product quality.3. Optimization on process management. To increase special production degree by means of adjustment of process layout, resource conformity, optimizing flow process; to improve logistics management level by establishing the distribution centre and proper distribution management; to enhance the process management level by improving the process documentation, strengthening guidance and pushing forward standard operation.The product quality and process level has been upgraded significantly by means of process optimization design to achieve the interchangeable approach assembly, specialized production of pipe like parts machining and oil painting on the parts as well.
