Cam mechanisms have compact structure and reliable performance and so on, which are extensively applied in automatic machines, such as packing machinery, filling machinery, textile machinery and so on, and enable strong adaptability in realizing intermission, indexing and other complex movements. Cam mechanisms have perfect kinematic characteristics, which are supported by accurate cam component. Cam is the core part of cam mechanism, and cam itself must have higher manufacturing accuracy.For the cylindrical groove-cam with translating roller follower, the cutter location control methods of cylindrical cam based on double envelope principle were studied with the theory of conjugating surfaces. The practical profile equation and the equation of profile machined by tool were given based on double envelope principle, and then the theoretical machining errors were also analyzed. Calculating theoretical machining errors is performed with the mathematical software-MATLAB. On account of specific example, the theoretical machining errors based on double envelope principle were evaluated by three methods——error analyse of corresponding points'distance, error analyse of normal distance and error analyse of the shortest distance.On account of cutter location control method raised, the analysis results show that: Distance of corresponding points is not the shortest distance between the profile machined by tool and practical profile and have nothing to do with h, the error of the distance between two space curved surfaces based on the analysis of normal distance is comparatively large, the method of error analyse of the shortest distance is the best one to embody machining error, and that it is of important theoretical meaning and practical application value.
