Tower cranes are essential equipment for large construction projects. With the construction boom, tower cranes are becoming large-scale, high-speed and intelligent, and thus the more secure system for them is required. Based on the national 863 project"Research on remote monitoring and intelligent maintenance of tower cranes", a remote virtual monitoring system for tower crane is implemented by adopting virtual reality technology. The kinematical model of tower cranes is built and the key motion parameters are defined also. The virtual tower cranes are driven with the data from sensors in field. The rendering engine of virtual scene is developed with DirectX. So a real-time monitoring environment is achieved, which is 3D, highly vivid and interactive.The main research contents in this thesis are as follow:1. Establish the total scene and the tower crane model library. According to the characteristics of the structure and movement of tower cranes, analyze the relationship between every part of the cranes, and then create the 3D models; Model the environmental elements through suitable technology; achieve optimization of several key issues for modeling.2. Realize the visualization and interoperability of the remote virtual monitoring system for tower crane. Design the rendering engine for monitoring system with DirectX. Then achieve a realistic, accurate and vivid 3D image display, and realize the human-computer interaction.3. Optimize the visual representation for the monitoring system. The aim of study is not only to improve the realistic picture, but also to enhance the real-time system.4. Achieve the virtual monitoring system of tower cranes. The monitoring system has high sense of immersion and interactivity, and the users could monitor the tower crane in many ways; the virtual working scene could be constructed quickly with parameterized design, which make the monitoring system has a wide range of adaptability.
