In view of shorter using period, bad reliability and stability and serious leakage of contacting mechanical seal for light hydrocarbon pumps in gas separation units of Shenchi Chemical Co., Ltd. Shandong, the new-type mechanical seals for light hydrocarbon pumps were developed with functional principle of non-contacting gas seal.In order to solve the problems of contacting mechanical seal for light hydrocarbon pumps, the new-type tandem structure combined contacting—non-contacting gas mechanical seal and auxiliary system were designed. The steady state characteristics of spiral grooved gas seals with numerical method were analyzed, and the change rule according to pressure or speed were presented. Based on that, the performances of the new-type seal were researched with experiment. The experimental results show that the new-type seal has lots of advantages such as excellent sealing performance,low face temperature increase and friction power loss when changing pressure or speed The gas seal could non-contacting run even if the pressure of nitrogen gas was zero in industrial application. The successful field application proved that the seal has an excellent sealing performance, reliability, stability and low loss of energy.This paper showed good guiding significance and engineering value to solve shorter using period and serious leakage of mechanical seal for light hydrocarbon pumps in refining device.
