With the extensive application of composite insulators, the deterioration of the composite insulator performance becomes increasingly severe. Most of the composite insulators of Baotou Power Supply Bureau are in service for more than five years, on which unexplained failures occur from time to time. For the security and reliability of transmission lines, the on-line detection is need to find the defects of composite insulators at transmission lines in advance, and prevent the transmission lines from tripping in time due to defects of composite insulators. The mathematical model of the composite insulator analysis and calculation is put forward. In order to accurately calculate and analysis the electric field around the insulators, the finite element method and the large-scale common software ANSYS are adopted. An online detect system for composite insulators is developed and applied for some composite insulators detection at 110kV and above transmission lines in Baotou Power Supply Bureau, on which the systematic analysis is applied. The research in this article has an important value to protect protect the reliability of transmission lines.
