The insulation strength of transmission line insulators will decrease greatly under the combine condition of heavy ice covering and pollution. The flashover experimental study on110kV-1000kV insulator string with contamination and ice covering were carried out in the large-sized artificial climate chamber in ultra high voltage (UHV) AC experimental base. The main research is following:(1) Simulating of natural and climatic conditions in the artificial climate chamber, , discusses the ice covered insulator flashover test method and the electric field on the line insulator Icing state effects.(2) Study on different types,thickness of ice layer, applied water conductivity and pollution levels of 500kV and below line insulator strings.(3) The relationship of insulator string length and icing flashover voltage for 14-54 units insulator discs in heavy icing and pollution condition.(4) Effect on icing flashover voltage for different string types including"I"type , double"I","V"and alternate-diameter insulator strings.(5) The discharge proces and its influencing factors and improvement meatures were in discussion.
