| From city impression point of view, color is the first sensory perception of urban objects.Color in the city to a large extent reflects the city's visual environmental quality, and meanwhile can not be avoided in daily life.Due to the characteristics of color itself, which to some extent is able to affect people's physical and psychological changes, the color quality of the city plays a crucial role in people's daily lives. In current urban color design, the psychological needs - the main subject of the city,is often ignored and the human-based design philosophy has not yet rooted in the color design process. In this paper, city color is explored from the perspective of emotional appeals in order to explain why people's psycological and emotional needs should be more focused in the process of city color planning and design so as to better meet people's needs.Through this research,it is found that people's emotional factors as well as the the psycological impact on people are often neglected in city color design. Therefore, this paper discusses the current problems associated with city color and proposes the approach to resolving these problems based on the case of the city of Xi'an,through the methodology of literature review, theory summary, field study and survey research. In this study, three major color problems are found in the city of Xi'an:1) the mix of various city colors which results in the lack of integrity;2) the vagueness of the functional division of regional colors which leads into the lack of recognition;3) the clutter of non-constant color which downgrades the city image. In a random online survey about the public's overall impression to Xi'an city color,41%of the respondents feel confusion and 26%for dirtiness and lack of order. The negative emotional experience has a larger propotion and 77%of respondents believe that Xi'an city color needs to be improved..There are many reasons accounting for these problems above. First of all,the relevant planning, supervision and management are inadequate and disorganized.Second, there are problems with the usage duration of the construction materials and the building facades have not been protected, maintained and cleaned in a better way;Third, the descrease of the natural color has affected the existing urban color; Finally, the lack of binding color ads. These are all major reasons for visual pollution, which lead people to have the negative emotions.Through investigation and research, this paper tries to propose the solutions to resolve the problems:First,a reasonable color division needs to be adopted to increase the identification of the city functions.Second, the traditional colors around the historical spots need to be protected to meet resident's specific emotions.Third, the propotion of the natural colors need to be increased to satisfy people's desire for nature. Fourth, the use of the flowing color needs to be under control so as to make it become the decorative color of a harmonious city.Five, the advertisement colors need to be strictly controlled to ensure that the colors used match the city's cultures and meet people's self-recognition towards the city.To summarize,in the color design for the city of Xi'an,both the particular historic characteristic of Xi'an as an ancient city as well as its modern aspects in the new era need to be both demonstrated. The root is to meet people's emotional appeals to Xi'an city color. This paper discusses the problems with the urban color from a new perspective, with the purpose to support the human-based design philosophy,in wich the design is to meet people's needs instead of being the art with people's admiration only.City color requires the participation of city residents. The designer should make the design based on people's emotional appeals and incoporate human-based philosophy into the design, so as to satisfy people s emotional and psycological needs while demonstrating the charm of the city. This in turn will be beneficial to society's harmonious environment and sustainable development. |
