Xihaigu,cold and drought region in Ningxia province,is the largest inhabited area of the Hui and is one of the poorest regions in China.It belongs to the region of hilly and gully in the Loess Plateaus.Renowned for poor,but folk houses in Xihaigu region have a variety of shapes and distinct regional features.The research focus on the traditional settlement and the residential buildings.On the Natural and human environment two fronts,this article analysis and researches in the area of the geographical features of traditional architecture through access to a large number of literature data and field research.Firstly,this article analysis the geographical features of the Xihaigu's traditional villages. the distribution patterns of settlements which are large scattered and small-polymerization are analysised.Summing up the characteristics of the formation of its geographical conditions is mainly affected by culture and religious factors.Secondly,basing on analyzing the types,shapes,space layouts,decoraive arts cha--racteristic,construction technology and their formation factors in turn,the factors affecting building forms is explored,which including local climate,religious culture and products resoures.Finally, the value of the research results for helping the rural construction of the arid areas in northwest of China is pointed out.
