As two different but well connected concepts, climate and region create the architecture. So there are different architectural forms and layouts in different districts. It is important to analyze the relationship between the building and climate. And it will be the effective method to resolve the energy shortage in modern world. Then the building design will be sustainable. At present, the passive cooling techniques applied in designing are mainly natural ventilation, shading, evaporation regenerative cooling, landscaping and so on.Based on plenty of residential buildings, this paper analyzes the cooling techniques according to the building design and application, such as planning and site selection, building layout, building form, building component and material. Then it generates 29 pattern languages, and the results will be shown in chart form for the designer.Using the specific meteorological data set for Chinese architectural thermal environment analysis, the paper studies the sun radiation in summer of China.Based on the day average radiation in cooling time,China is divided into six districts which are used for cooling with sun radiation. This result optimizes the cooling districts made by the literature[19].Then three representative cities are analyzed with the cooling districts and pattern languages. At last the method for passive cooling design comes out: 1.analyze the local micro-climate:research the meteorological information and data, then study the environment around the site;2.choose the design models:pick up the suitable design models based on the analyze of the data and the characteristics of the passive cooling ways;3.building design:using the pattern languages you have choose, you can design the building layout and form, component style and size on the basis of the around conditions and meteorological data, which should also be in line with the basic requirements for building design.Based on the passive cooling districts, this paper shows the design models about passive cooling methods which are used to form a pattern language. This paper is hoped to make the designers familiar with the passive cooling ways which can play a guiding role in the design industry.
