Rational passenger traffic structure is one of the prerequisites to make urban passenger traffic system develop healthily and orderly. It is imperative to research its rational trend because big cities in our country are undergoing the key period when passenger traffic structure is transforming. Faced with the diversification of resident trip demand, in terms of urban sustainable development, it is necessary for us to integrate all the traffic modes like bicycle and treadmill or private automobile. Affirming the role of all the traffic modes fully, not only social and economic development is promoted, but environmental factor and energy demand are considered. Based on the background above, the paper probes into the rational trend of urban passenger traffic system structure and optimizes it.Firstly, the paper analyzes the characteristics of different traffic mode, summarizes influencing factors of urban passenger traffic system and analyzes them in tailed. Then urban passenger traffic structure development patterns are proposed, which provide basis for our country. In addition, the paper according to the meaning and aim of urban passenger traffic system structure optimization (sustainable development and the sustainable urban passenger traffic system structure), by applying systematic dynamics, analyzes the relationship among the factors in passenger transportation system from the macro viewpoint. At the same time, by regulating the inner mechanism in the system, the system optimization can be realized. Then according to their sustainable ability, the paper validates mass transportation's effect on urban traffic sustainable development. Most importantly, according to the principles of how to decide urban passenger traffic system and by taking traffic efficiency maximization as its aim, the paper establishes structure optimization model for big cities passenger traffic. The results of optimization provided decision evidences for urban passenger traffic structure. Harbin is taken as an example. Finally, by analyzing experiences of overseas big cities' passenger traffic development and obstacles of passenger traffic structure optimization in our country, the paper gives urban passenger traffic structure optimization strategies for our country and particularly for Harbin.
