The MV power networks are very important, because they supply power to consumers directly. When there is fault in a MV power line, it can make large economic loss to power corporations and consumers. After researching various methods of fault location, in this paper we propose a single-phase-to-ground fault location method—C Traveling Wave Method, which is special for MV distribution lines. The method character is that it can locate the fault in a power distribution lines with branches. We emulate power distribution lines with branches by using ATP software, at the same time, process the emulation signal by wavelet packets in MATLAB software, and find the relation of the special signal and the fault point, then locate the fault point accurately. This method is proved to be feasible by lots of emulations with MV distribution fault lines, and only relevant to fault position and line construction, it is irrelevant to the voltage of the instantaneous fault and the current amplitude. This method has a wide application prospect for its accuracy.
