By accurate fault location, we can cut down time to repair lines, bring up power supply reliability and reduce lost. It also is helpful to check out fault reason and deal with shortcoming quickly when transient fault happens. The topic of the thesis is chosen from the practical work of power system operation. Its research results are of the theoretical significance and important practical value.First, we summarizes the general application of fault location and wavelet transform and gives physical conceptions of fault traveling wave,, Then, compared with Fourier transform, wavelet transform demonstrates important symbols such as better time-frequency symbols and easy to distinguish singular signals. And we discusses about multi-resolution analysis and singular signal discrimination theory, and brings forth new two-terminal line traveling wave fault location algorithm which is based on wavelet transform. And we sets up the flow process diagram and the block diagram of traveling wave fault location and phase selection algorithm for two-terminal lines on the basis of wavelets transform modular maximums, brings forth general design of traveling wave fault location and phase selection system. The last, the main research works in this thesis are summarized and further studies are suggested.
