The paper focus on the modern masonry architecture in Former Concession of Wuhan, based on tectonics theory, through discussions on the effects between constructing process of masonry building and architecture forms. The main contents covered the relationships of its terrain tectonic technology,culture and changes of forms of the masonry buildings which were constructed during the period from the establishment of Wuhan Port to the foundation of China. By reconsidering the essentials of construction of masonry buildings, tectonics provides a new architectural understanding of man-built space. On the basis of acquisitions of tectonics theory and a amount of field survey of the modern masonry buildings, a comparison is made between different the expressive force in the construction of buildings. Also, the paper comes up the tectonic principle and expressive features of masonry building.The first part of the paper is the introduction, which reviewed the method of tectonics and Critical Regionalism. It puts forward the problems which need to be solved and specifies the objective of the paper. In the second and third parts of the paper, the development of masonries and tectonic characteristics of the modern masonries are introduced. Besides, the tectonic technology features are analyzed and the logic for the construction is provided. The forth part compares the features of contemporary masonry buildings in Wuhan, Shanghai, and Guangzhou and studies the architectural materials, structure and construction features. The futures of tectonic forms showed by masonry buildings were also summarized. In the fifth part, the tectonic logic is summed up through analysis of typical cases of masonry buildings: the art patterns of masonry is shown through masonries; the mechanical nature of shown through structure logic. In the last part, from the view of tectonics the possibility of a new way to protect of masonry buildings in Wuhan is worth expecting.The paper leads to the conclusion on the constructing rules and expression characteristics of masonry buildings.
