What is residential district? It is human residential district, and concludes all the forms for human living, such as dispersive, concentrative, traditional, modernistic, country and urban. In recent years, the amount of residential district of the nation has been increased rapidly. In addition, the trend is being strengthened constantly, which marks the coming of an age of"great residential district".In a short time, the development of great residential district mode has changed the traditional city structure, overthrown the original city look, and changed the traditional of the human living style. However, is the mode of great residential district beneficial to the long-term development of the city? Does it satisfy residents'living demands of a modern city? Are there any other options for residential district planning?By the research and analysis on the theory and practice of residential planning at home and abroad in the last 20 years, the importance and necessity of residential district as an organic ingredient of the city is proposed in this paper.The writer chosed the project of Ju'er hutong new courtyard house which was masterminded by Wu liangyong as the research object. This project was completely investigated by literature consultation, statistics on-the-spot inspection and interview. By collection and analysis of the results, the constitutive characteristic of Ju'er hutong is summarised.Furthermore, the author re-interpretated the existence and value of Ju'er hutong, combining with the new theory of residential planning. The Ju'er-hutong residential mode is proposed, which is human-oriented, compact in layout, multi-functional and open block.Through reflections on the origin and problems of the great residential district, the author propose that the successful experiences of Ju'er hutong can be used for reference for the present age district planning. And the following are the proposed new planning and designing principles for the new residential district:1. Planning principles: human principle, compact principle, open principle, and mixed-used principle2. Design principles: compact small block principle, diversified shared courtyard residence principle, human fitted public place principle, density urbanism network principle, and organic contemporary living principle. In this paper, the author will provide some valuable principles and method for future residential construction, so as to enrich the related theories of the district planning for the present age.
