The purpose of optimal reactive power compensation is to determine the optimal sizing and location of VAR source, so that the security and the economic operation of power system at different load levels and operation conditions can be realized. By analyzing current mathematical model and relative optimal methods, a kind of optimal method for reactive power compensation planning in radial distribution system has been presented. Considering right, normal, and heavy load operation mode and fault conditions the mathematical model has been established in which the sum of yearly active power loss fee and minimized investment in new addition of VAR equipment divided into each year is used as the objective function. Each operating model is coordinated by using heavy load loss time to optimize the overall planning. In addition, by taking two examples calculating by using this mathematical model optimal reactive power compensation planning in radial distribution system, the validity, rationality and universal applicability of the methods and the effectiveness of the calculation method are proved.
