Nowadays, China's economy maintains a high-speed development, and city renewal process is moving on at an unprecedented large scale and speed. Under such circumstances, old-architecture renewal and reuse is accordingly becoming a social focus. Around this topic, this paper makes a discussion and puts forward such an opinion that old-architecture renewal is not simply to pull down the old buildings and construct new ones on them, but to realize a second birth of old architecture by means of reuse. This thesis makes an analysis on the buildings that need renewal from many aspects, and proposes some effective methods for reuse, intending to promote the realization of the old building reutilization. This thesis consists of seven parts in five chapters. The part of preface explains the reason why the author selects this topic for discussion, and makes a generality on the current situation of architecture renewal at home and abroad, as well as the problems at the present stag. Meanwhile, it brings forward the study methods and tenet of this paper. The first chapter analyses the general situation in old-building renewal and reuse: first of all, it classifies the old buildings, and thereafter, further expounds the general status in old-building reuse at home and abroad, and points out the main problems existed in present China's old building reuse process. The second chapter emphatically dwells on the possible elements that affect the renewal of old buildings. The third chapter makes discussions on the problems in the renewal process of old buildings, and proposes accordant ways for modification. The fourth chapter gives the expectation on the future of old-building reuse, and points out that there is a capacious development space for reuse of old building resources, however, there also exist many problems that need to be solved. In the fifth chapter, through exemplification, the availability of old-building renovation is re-demonstrated. The conclusion part of the paper emphasizes that to demolish for rebuilding is not the only way for old-building reconstruction, while in the process of urban renovation and development, architects should go all out their efforts to have the architectural resources fully utilized, and to realize a consummate unification of economic benefit, social effect, and environmental efficiency.
