Focused on alterable density method of topology optimization for continuum structure, the species and characters of density interpolation models, the optimization criterion method (OC) and the method of moving asymptotes (MMA), the definitions, causations of the numerical problems and the methods to eliminate them were studied systemically. The following aspects were mainly investigated in this paper:Firstly, based on RAMP interpolation model, the performances of OC and MMA were compared numerically, the range of the penalty factor was studied, and the effect on the final topology of different filter radiuses was studied numerically and the range of the filter radius was given.Secondly, the topology optimization problem for continuum structures with self-weight loads was investigated with focusing on two main difficulties namely the parasitic effect and inactive volume constraint.(1) For the parasitic effect appeared in low density regions during topology optimization procedure, the reasons and the elimination methods were investigated.(2) For the difficulty of inactive volume constraint arisen in topology optimization problem with self-weight loads, the reason was analyzed by using Kuhn-Tucker condition. In order to eliminate this phenomenon, two interpolation models, namely RAMP model and multinomial model, were compared by varying the associated penalty factors.
