Crawler crane is a kind of mobile lifting equipment, which is widely used in chemical plant construction, civicism building, architecture construction and ports and wharfs in all kinds of domains of the national economy. With the crane's hoisting tonnage increasing, security aspects needing to be considered are becoming more and more complicated, especially after the superlift equipment being increased, a higher demand for the state monitoring and accurate control of the crawler crane is brought forward.This paper is the research on the technical aspects of the moment limiter, taking the background of series of actual crawler crane projects, which are exploitured by Department of Mechanical Engineering in Dalian University of Technology.(1) An embedded analysis on the pivotal technologies of crawler cranes is done, especially on the aspect of the superlift case. This paper introduced the concept of load rate. The security of the entire crane is guaranteed by controling the machine actions,on the basis of load rate.(2) Aimming at the features of the data collection parts and the output driver parts in the crawler crane moment limiter , the collectivity design method is devised that is achieved by FPGA, in which Altera's NIOS soft-core technology is applied to realize the function of CPU using the soft-core, to make other external equipments into system integration betaking the AVALON bus technology, to actualize the system-hardware-embedded design for the crawler crane moment limiter linking chips of different functions.(3) Embedded-system is designed, centering the NIOS II soft-core, integrating SDRAM and FLASH and the like using SOPC builder, translating and editing in the Quartus II and accomplishing the test on EP1C12 .(4) The system's software design is completed according to the moment limiter's control idea of crawler crane. Embedded-operating-systemμc/os-II is adopted to ensure the reliability of the software.(5) A mature display is adopted to complete the interface design and CAN communications' design in this article.The pivotal technologies on crawler cranes's moment limiter is analyzed in this paper. Embedded research on the control method for the superlift case and CAN communications, which is widely used in engineering machinery, is done, in which burgeoning soft-core technology is handled , system design is completed , hardcore tests are done in the laboratory to find correspondence effect with the display favorable. The study fills up the FPGA application blank in the field of mechanical engineering, providing a reference method for the domestic crawler cranes' moment limiter design.
