In order to validate the design plan, physical prototype is often manufactured after the design is finished in traditional design methods of crane. If defect is found, the design will be modified and the plan should be validated again with new physical prototype. There will be several modifying- validating–modifying courses before the final product is determined. Generally, this course is long and the cost is expensive, especially to the large-scale devices with complicated structure, such as portal crane. In recent years, with the finite element method and virtual prototyping technology becoming more mature, many large-scale and engineering oriented finite element software and virtual prototyping software appears. With these tools, all sorts of loads and constraints can be simulated, so does the dynamic response of the system. At the same time, the output result of simulation, which can be used to conclude the needed data in actual condition, can be obtained. It's meaningful for the decrease of design period and cost.Based virtual prototyping technology, 3D digital model of boom system of portal crane is built with I-DEAS and ADAMS software (Strength analysis of boom system is carried out with I-DEAS software and the dynamic analysis is done with I-DEAS and ADAMS software). Depending on the real working conditions of crane and correlative reference information, strength analysis is carried on with finite element method and the corresponding distribution of stress is obtained. At the same time, considering the effect of part flexibility, when the dynamics analysis is carried, the rigid-elastic coupling system is built and correlative analysis is executed. From this analysis, the dynamic response data of main parts is got. Seen from this paper, there are important practical values to design the boom system ofportal crane with finite element method and the strength of boom system can satisfy the design standard; at the same time, this paper also shows that carrying on the dynamic analysis of boom system with virtual prototyping technology is feasible. This is primary attempt of advanced method, which can supply powerful tool in design of crane.
