With the development of large power electricity transfer technology, such as electric cars, maglev train, and electric impel marine, motors, which is low speed, high torque density, and direct drive, are demanded intensively. The torque density of the traditional motors is limited by the coupling magnet-electric effect of teeth and slots. However, the Transverse flux permanent magnet motor (TFPM) can make it, which has the traits of high torque density and efficient. Instead of the traditional motors, the TFPM can save primary material and energy, hence more and more motor researchers and merchants all over the world begin to care it.The subject is a transverse one. The paper research the structure and design the TFPM to bring the advantage of high torque density and high power density into full play, and analyze and calculate the magnetic field of the TFPM. Based on the above analysis a prototype is made to testify the theory achievement trying to get better performance and technique target. The characteristics and working theory are introduced in this paper and many structures of TFPM are presented according to different kinds of sorting methods. The paper presents a novel structure with three phases circle arranged in stator and winding inside and outside. Owing to its special structure, the transverse flux motor can't adopt the traditional method. So in this paper model of the sample motor is set up in use of ANSOFT and its magnetic field is analyzed with 3D finite element method. Based on the magnetic field calculation, the paper programs a electromagnetism design and calculation software, with integrating the PSPM parameters calculation method with the result of 3D magnetic field to design the TFPM. In addition, the paper analyzes the TFPM's stress field, temperature field, and natural frequency. Finally, a 20kW prototype is manufactured, which establishes the foundation for making sample motors with better performances.
