With the rapid development of highway construction, the application of asphalt pavement is very extensive in China. But because of increasing of traffic load and operating requirements, asphalt pavement construction faces many problems. Marshall design method in applicable codes can't solve the early damage of asphalt pavement structure. Meanwhile, many problems of Superpave design method haven't reached consensus, and isn't applied widely. So the designing method of the asphalt mixture should be researched more deeply.By reviewing gradation theory, this paper analyses the Superpave design method thoroughly. The gradation scope of Superpave design method is acquired, which is beneficial to improve gradation design. Based on estimating initial asphalt binder content and combining with Superpave method, it becomes much easier to design gradation. Using Marshall and Superpave methods respectively, the asphalt mixture of the same material is designed. Several indexes are compared, such as asphalt content, designing volume indexes, compacting power..Types of Asphalt mixture have the greatest influence on the optimum asphalt content designed by two methods through statistic analysis. The linear regression to ensure the optimal asphalt content is made on AC mixture, and the binary equations are acquires. it is beneficial to determine the asphalt content. Based on the performance test of asphalt mixture, different design method of asphalt mixture is proposed to different demand. Two design methods are compared on raw material selection, grading design, ensuring optimal asphalt content, performance, and so on, Borrowing ideas form their advantages the PSM method is proposed in order to design asphalt mixture with excellent performance.
