Nowadays, intelligent traffic system has already become the main trend of road traffic management development and the main method to solve serious traffic problems. Urban traffic control is one of the main approaches to improve urban traffic effectively, and it is also the symbol of urban modernization and intelligence. Based on the statistical data, more than 70% of the cars travel in platoons on the main arterial road. This phenomenon indicates that a great portion of the vehicle delay at an intersection is caused by stopped vehicle platoons. If we do not interrupt the platoon's moving, we can reduce the traffic delay time. This paper introduces the related research background world widely and the significance of research on adaptive control method and the platoon-based traffic control.Based on the current domestic and overseas research situation, this paper uses average traffic delay time, numbers of stops to control the optimize target, uses region control and single intersection control in urban traffic control system as research purpose. We introduce and define four key variables to the platoon, analyze the platoon-based region adaptive control method and propose the platoon-based single intersection adaptive control method. Through simulation, we testify the validity and rationality of the method.First, this paper captures the characteristics of platoon moving from traffic data. Provide four key variables to identify platoon——platoon sizes, platoon speed, car headway and the interval between the platoons. After that, this paper discusses the prediction method, identifies the cars and predicts the platoon's moving on network.Secondly, this paper researches on the region adaptive control method. Based on the research of advanced region control methods world widely, we do some comparison, analyze the advantage and disadvantage of the platoon-based region adaptive control method, and present the applicability of the method.Thirdly, this paper proposes a platoon-based adaptive control algorithm on single intersection, which can reduce the delays on major-minor intersection types by minimizing the interruptions to the platoon on major road. First, proposes the appropriate location of the detector and finally gives the control algorithm and provides the platoon-based adaptive signal control method. The simulation results show that in the case of lower traffic flow on minor road, compared to the pre-timed control and semi-actuated control, a platoon-based adaptive control algorithm can reduce the delays effectively. At last, we summarize the work of this paper, point out the further research orientation.
