As one of the significant research fields of ITS,arterial coordination control is an effective way to improve the capacity of urban road network and relieve the traffic congestion. In recent years, when urban traffic managements are committed to solving the problem of traffic congestion, the urban air pollution has become increasingly serious, which attracts people's attention gradually. Therefore,it is of great significance to conduct the study on the optimization of arterial signal coordination considering reducing the traffic emission, which enhances the design of coordinated control scheme of urban arterials, improves the efficiency of the arterial system, and maximizes the environmental benefits. In this context, the study on the traffic signal coordination and optimization for urban arterials considering the emission of platoons is conducted in this paper.First, based on the theory and method of arterial signal coordination, the applicability of the "maximum green wave band method" and the "minimum delay method" are compared. Then, the model of optimizing coordinated signal control for arterials with the objective of minimized delay is proposed.Secondly,on the basis of the analysis of the vehicle driving mode, the partition method of the platoon operating mode for the two adjacent intersections of arterial system is proposed. The speed data of platoon under different operating modes are obtained through VISSIM simulation platform.Combined with the average emission rates, the emission factors of different pollutants under different operating modes are obtained. The model for estimating platoon emission of arterial system is developed.Furthermore, the model of optimizing coordinated signal control for arterials considering the emission of platoons is developed. The relative phase differences between intersections and the average speed of platoons are regarded as the constraint of the model. The minimization of arterial platoon delay and arterial platoon emissions are regarded as the primary and secondary objectives in the proposed model, respectively.Besides, the forbearing stratified sequencing method combined with branch and bound method are further developed to solve the model. Finally,a case study of a typical arterial system is conducted for the application of the proposed model in this paper. The phase differences of three different optimization schemes, which are the arterial signal coordination of fixed phase difference, the arterial signal coordination without considering the platoon emissions, and the arterial signal coordination considering the platoon emissions, are calculated. Moreover, the platoon delay and emissions of three schemes are compared. The results show that the control scheme considering the platoon emissions could not only decrease the platoon delay and improve the efficiency of arterial system effectively, but also reduce the arterial platoon emissions at a certain level, thus protecting the environment from pollutions.
