Typified by their magnum opus Yokohama International Port Terminal, Foreign Office Architects are of more and more concern in architecture circles as well as their original works. Based on the works and publishments of FOA, this thesis has done stepwise studies on the conception and the methodology of architecture design of FOA.The conception and the methodology of architecture design of FOA are closely allied to the globalization nowadays. With a view from foreign people against the background of globalization, FOA put forward their original design conception that aiming at creating non-representational architecture, reunderstand their architectural works with the intermedia of sueface, by the theory of phylogenesis and the classification of species.Following this conception, FOA establishs a rational design process: with the intervention of objective elements of the site, surface is detailed final sorting over and over and is determined the final species. The forming of surface permeates the process of the design of FOA, and this process can be described by the classification of species. As far as opration, also using the non-representation as a point of departure, FOA establishs an original design methodology that puts emphasis on the relation between building and ground, on traffic and custom and on surface and material, and that uses computer aided design system on a large scale in design development. With the excluding of preinstall idea, objective elements intervene richly design precess, the openness and growth traits of the design result become possible, and at last the target that irrational form comes from rational design process comes true.
