Articulated Dump Truck (ADT) is a non-highway heavy-duty transport vehicles, articulated dump truck is being paid much attention by many countries in the world for its favorable maneuverability and extensive road adaptability. With the rapid development of China's national economy, ADT will become essential transport tool for road construction, mine mining and other kinds of projects. Its market prospects are better.The vehicle frame is the base for the power train, cab and cargo body assembly. It is also the primary component for carrying the weight of vehicle parts, passengers and carry-on loads. The automobile frame besides should have the enough strength and the suitable rigidity, but should also have the good dynamic property. The frame lightweight is one in modern automobile frame design important topics. Lightweight frame can not only reduce energy consumption and reduce emissions, and also can reduce the consumption of raw materials and lower vehicle production costs.An articulated frame was designed for the self-development of an articulated dump truck in this paper. The corresponding three-dimensional digital design of articulated frame was completed by I-DEAS software. The static analysis, modal analysis for the frame was accomplished by the finite element method. The dynamic characteristics of the frame were appraised according to certain evaluation principles of the vehicle frame vibration. The lightweight articulated frame was optimized through the sensitivity analysis method controlled by the first natural frequency and the components thicknesses of the frame. The frame, after optimization, is lightened by 241 kg (about 7.10% of the total frame weight); and the flexural rigidity of the frame maximum moment location was reduced by 4.34%.Thus,the first natural frequency was increased from10.2 Hz to 10.8 Hz. The optimized frame can adequately meet the total performance request of the frame used in the real truck.The articulated frame general design method summary and the research have been carried out through the design of articulated frame in the development of an articulated dump truck. The design flow of articulated frame was summarized. The design contents, rules and method of the articulated frame in the preliminary design, the dynamic appraisal and the lightweight process were studied.
