It has been twenty years since industrial design first entered China, and now in the 21 century China has already become the country with the most art design education facilities of the world. Now there are over one thousand secondary education facilities that have design majors. By numbers, education of industrial design in China has developed rapidly in the last decade, and the design major has become the hottest field of studying in secondary educations, whereas the industrial design takes the place as one of the eight fastest growing majors.However, due to the late start of industrial design educations in China, and the lack of government attention to such fields, the country with the most art design education facilities is also the country that lacks insufficient amount of design in their products.In Japan, the system of industrial design educations has combined the systems of other countries, and merged with its own traditional system of art design education. The product is a unique industrial design education system. Industrial design is a comprehensive, cross-cutting science that exists at the edge. University of Tsukuba in Japan put forwards a new frame work of teaching that includes "study groups" and "category of study" in order to vigorously develop its interdisciplinary teaching system. In the first and second year, its undergraduates of industrial design take common courses regardless to their major, and can chose to take art and design relevant lectures with undergraduates of other art majors. In the third year, the undergraduates further determine their subjects of studying and the direction of research when they graduate. In China, adapting the society, focusing on reality, and designing in any form has always been the special features of TongJi University. It focuses on the cooperating of industrial design educations and practical designs, encourages students to participate in corporation-study-research activities, training students to improve their practical abilities, practical engineering abilities, and ability to adapt to society.This paper focuses on the defects of modern industrial design education systems. Starting from the industrial design major, it discuses the relativity of industrial design to corporations, economy, and society. It also indicates the importance of adaptability education. By analyzing and contrasting the industrial design education systems and undergraduate courses of the two universities in China and Japan, it finds each of their advantages and disadvantages. By taking a step forward, combing the system of industrial education in our university, comparing the courses structure, it proposes the new direction of improving the education system. Industrial design is diverse, and the comprehensive design education is also diverse. There are steps taken by foreign design education facilities that are capable to be used as references, but we also need to combine with our situations and bring our advantage to the table, so that we can improve and reconstruct the system of industrial education of China.
