The roughness coefficient is a key factor which has a bearing on the engineering investment on the premise of satisfying transporting water capacity when the tunnel is designed, so the meaning that the roughness coefficient is selected in reason is very important. For the large transport water engineering, the roughness coefficient is selected by observing the similar engineering. And major content of prototype observation of roughness coefficient for tunnel is measure of flow and water level.Firstly, the paper discussed the purpose and significance of subject study, current development of detecting water level in domestic and international and the process of establishment of subject. The structure and functions, run flow and the mode of information transmission of water level automatic monitoring system are simply analyzed. The water level monitoring base on ultrasonic sensor is emphasized. The working principle, hardware composition (including mechanical structures of monitoring device and circuit of water level gather) and software design (including controlling software design of water level gather and monitoring software design of PC).Also, some methods of data traffic in water level automatic monitoring system are introduced, which can be designed base on different requests. The monitoring software design of PC in Delphi has friendly interface and powerful batabase, and it can control the water level gather even there are long diantance, such as collection, communication, storage and dispose.The spot experiment and laboratory expeiment show this conclusion, which the system based on the paper is reliable, and it can realize real-time and automatic transmission of water level data. All of then can act as accurate decision-making and references for some department.The function of this system and main research results:1. Making a CAN water level gather in tunnel base on ultrasonic sensor and the gather can be used in terrible condition. It not only transmits the data to PC, but also saves data itself when loses the communication with PC, that ensure integrality of data.2. Writing automatic monitoring software of PC base on Delphi. The software can display and save original current, and also can display and save fact water level of section be measured directly by using patameter, that ensure veracity of data. The software can save data base on requirement and save data itself.3. Data traffic between PC and sensor is resolved. In condition of middle or far distance, water level automatic monitoring system base on GSM and GPRS are brought forward.4. Studying and designing a whole tunnel water level automatic monitoring system, this was experimentized in Pandaoling Tunnel of Yindaruqin Engineering in Yongdeng Gansu and gathered a mass of experiment data.
