Recent rapid growth in computer, semiconductor and micro-electronics technology and integration of 3C (Computer,Communication,Consumer) enable embedded applications to more and more fields. The embedded technology developments are likely to bring about many life-style changes around the world. The healthcare industry too stands to benefit from these developments.The traditional physiological signal measuring instruments or devices possess some shortcomings, such as high prices, bulky dimensions, ill-portability and excessive connection cables. One of the main purposes of homecare telemedicine is to develop a wireless, low-cost and use-friendly system which allows patients to measure their own vital signs, such as ECG (Electrocardiogram), and provide the health care professionals with the facility to remotely monitor the patient's vital signs quickly and easily.We aim to design an innovating portable ECG system, being able to get rid of said shortcomings, which holds apparent advantages in service costs and service efficiency and, hence, shall be the trend for the future.In this paper, first, Intel XScale PXA270 (core frequency: 523MHz) is used as the processor, basic of high performance and intelligentization, which makes the system functions extensible and upgradeable. Second, embedded Linux operation system is firstly confirmed as the soul of hardware-software co-design of embedded systems, making up the soft platform of ease-of-use issues.A novel method is used to overcome shortcomings of real time performance which is combined with threaded IRQs, real-time scheduling module, real time clock system and etc. Third, the present study suggests that the mobile telemedicine system using GPRS is aids to patient monitoring and diagnosis as well as a convenient means of communications at home for health care.Our research is based on UP-TECHPXA270 developing platform. We try to propose a prototype of the embedded ECG system. Experiment results that we achieve the schedule on the whole.
