To solve the faults caused by lightning stroke in overhead distribution lines , it is proposed to use the parallel gap lightning protection devices of arc extinguished by high-speed airflow in overhead distribution lines. The parallel gap lightning protection devices is installed on the distribution lines to protect insulator strings against being burnt by power frequency electric arc when the lines meet lightning strokes or power frequency flashover of insulator. when the power frequency electric arc is established by lightning strokes, it can quickly cut off frequency arc. The devices can achieve the functions to restrict the external over-voltage and avoid frequent tripping.The topics study on the characteristics of arc fault clearance from the basic conditions for arc suppression, and established improved MAYR arc model, fluid dynamics arc model and the chain arc model, and using improved MAYR arc model to simulate gas blowing interrupter process .Observe the arc voltage and current changes in the gas blowing interrupter process With high-speed cameras and oscilloscopes ,study the inhibitory effect on the arc establishing rate and arc rekindling rate by the high-speed airflow .The testing and MATLAB simulation show that: in the open-air environment, gap arc can be effectively cut off and extinguished by the impact of the high-speed airflow.Lightning trip-out rate calculation shows that distribution lines installed on gas blowing interrupter arc of gap lightning protection decices, can be substantially reduced lines lightning trip-out rate. The devices installed on the overhead transmission lines ,can make a qualitative progress of the safety performance in the HV and EHV transmission lines in our country, achieve breakthrough progress in the protection of insulation.
