At present, the primary methods which are widely used to reinforce arch bridge are"enlarging section"and"sticking steel plate". The two methods both improve behavior of structures and bearing capacity of the original bridge by the function of external causes, but internal causes are the foundation of destroying structures. Therefore, it is how to change applied force system of structure, redistribute internal force of structure, improve bearing capacity by estimating evolution of bridge from the angle of internal cause that should be seriously studied.So called"the method of releasing energy"is a kind of new method, new technique and new craftwork to quickly improve bearing capacity of bridge. The method changes applied force system of main arch by processing arch springing with special technique, release internal force of main arch springing of original bridge, redistribute internal force of main arch ,improve behavior of original bridge, explore potential of main arch oneself.Basic principle and feasibility of reinforcing bridge with"the method of releasing energy"are deeply introduced in this paper. After expatiating structural calculation analysis of two modes—non-hinge arch and releasing energy arch of many representative arch bridges, model comparison test, and application to solid bridge (shuang long bridge) and loading test of the bridge, the paper prove that the method can greatly reduce negative bending moment top flange of arch springing bears, adjust internal force of main arch, redistribute internal force, and improve performance of structure. Compared with non—hinge arch, releasing energy arch can roughly save 30% material under the condition of same load grade, and can increase a load grade under the condition of similar architectural material. So, reinforcing old and dangerous arch bridge with"the method of releasing energy"to improve bearing capacity is absolutely feasible, and take on important social and economic benefits and practical meaning of engineering.
