Universities are playing a more and more important role in the process of the rapid development of world economy,acceleration of globalization and advancement of science and technology.Higher education of China has gained a momentum since mid 1990's;it has transformed from educating the elite to educating the mass and it will eventually evolve into one that advocates lifelong education and education for all.The recruitment expansion of universities in China started from 1999,with an average increase of 34%per year.The gross recruitment percentage in the United States was 80.9%in 1996.China proposes that it will attain a gross recruitment percentage of 15%in the year 2010.Judging from this,education of China is very promising.However,the perspectives of the present researches concerning universities campuses are quite limited.In view of this, this research attempts to probe into the ideas and practices concerning the evolution and innovation of university campuses not only by studying the campuses themselves,but also by placing the evolution and innovation of universities in the context of cities,by drawing from the existing theories concerning city construction and from the perspectives of urban planning, sociology,management and architecture.This research focuses on university campuses and consists of three parts approximately:Firstly,the thesis attempts to explore into the origins and development of Chinese and foreign universities,concentrating on analyzing the influences of politics,economy,science and technology,and culture etc. on the development of universities and points out that the key subjects of a university are the impetus for the development of university campuses and the researches with regard to campus planning should be the ones that study the relationship between development of universities and urban planning and distribution of industries.Secondly,by focusing on the history and present conditions of Agriculture University of Yunnan,the thesis points out that Agriculture University of Yunnan cannot be compared with Oxford University,Cambridge University and Stanford University etc.in terms of the campus paths that are congested,the scenery that is lack of levels and a center,the spaces that are in disorder and the buildings that do not have special features.It draws the conclusion that judging from the evolution history of Agriculture University of Yunnan and other universities,universities play an essential role in the development of cities and in the meantime cities also provide support for universities.With the fierce competition of the contemporary times,cities are no exceptions.Therefore,it is very necessary to make a thorough research into the relationship between cities and universities.Lastly,this paper proposes suggestions on the relationship between university planning and city planning,the influence of advantageous subjects on the distribution of industries and space structure and the establishment of a coordinating mechanism as well as the innovation of university campuses.
