Reactive power planning is very important for ensuring the quality of voltage, security and economics of power system. This paper researched on particle swarm optimization algorithms of reactive power planning.This paper builds the model of power system reactive power planning, and develops PSO in many ways to solved the normal PSO's disadvantage of getting in local optimum easily, suggests an improved Catastrophe-PSO. And the new method is used for the problem of reactive power planning.The experiments show that the algorithm in this paper can improve the structure of PSO's population, reinforce the population diversity, and quicken the speed of convergence and improves the algorithm performance effectively. It reaches the optimum result rapidly and reasonably in the reactive power planning. The system maintains the voltage at a reasonable level, reduces system power loss and reactive scale of investment in equipment effectively. All of these fully proved the correctness and effectiveness of the algorithm.
