Reactive power optimization is very important for ensuring the quality of voltage, security and economics of power system. Two algorithms of reactive power planning and their combination were studied in this paper.The non-linear programming model is established in this paper, the optimization problem is solved by a path following algorithm which is one of the interior point methods. In the actual power system, the compensating capacity of reactive power and transformer tap positions are discrete variables. This paper presents a discrete particle swarm optimization algorithm for the problem which interior point method hard to deal with discrete variables. This algorithm constructs the discrete position set and the discrete speed set, express the discrete variables accurately.Build a hybrid algorithm which combine interior point method with PSO algorithm, This algorithm was applied in IEEE-6 bus system and IEEE-30 bus system. The results show its validity and effectiveness.
